I have always focused on primarily on World of Warcraft content for YouTube, with other games coming second fiddle, but there have always been other games.

The question is what other games are popular?

As someone that watches as much YouTube content as I produce I generally stay away from new games that are big releases. Some of the channels I subsribe to do a great job at Let’s Plays, or Walkthroughs. TheRadBrad springs to mind as a consistently high achiever for the big Triple-A games. But when I enjoy a game, or think I will enjoy the game I will find the prospect of doing a Let’s Play appealing. It’s not about getting 10,000 hits, it’s about the enjoyment of playing the game, and that at least some people will enjoy experiencing it with you.

So, Here’s some plans for upcoming videos.

World of Warcraft MoP

The current series has been trotting along slowly, visiting each dungeon in turn. My plans here were to see each dungeon and battleground, playing through them in turn to get a complete let’s play. As it turns out this wont be happening as Garthis and I, but I may continue this series solo.

However, Garthis, Teeps and I will be doing a recruit a friend series commencing very soon. Hopefully we’ll get chance to focus on more end-game focused content.

World of Warcraft : PvP

I will be continuing focusing on PvP content on my main character. I’m considering moving to a PvP guild to allow me to focus on Rated Battlegrounds, and 3s team. Currently I only do 2s arenas and this really isn’t the optimal way to run.

Guild Wars 2

The plan is I will return to Guild Wars 2 to finish off the Jumping Puzzles and vistas. The other GW2 videos on my channel are some of the most watched content, and I should really be focusing on providing popular content.

Other Games

I have just started a Bioshock Infinite let’s play, and will see this game through to completion. Other new games that appeal to me will also fall in to this category – but I will not be playing ever new game due to lack of time. :-(

Garthis

My brother, Garthis would like to do some Let’s Plays of other games, he’s looking at some of the classic Zelda games. Can’t wait to see that!

Is there anything else you’d like us to contentrate on? Let us know in a comment here, or on youtube.

So, if you follow this blog, or me on youtube you may have noticed a distinct lack of updates lately. There’s a couple of very good reasons for that. So, let’s be quick about it..

“It’s not me. It’s you”

1) World of Warcraft was, despite the initial highs of Pandaria, not really holding my interest in the same way previous expansions have. I can’t quite put my finger on it – the reliance on daily quest grinding, the terrible performance of hunters in the initial tier, or even the fact that after grinding every possible way of getting gear I was still unable to get some fundamental upgrades. Hitting your head against the same brick wall repeatedly isn’t fun.

2) Okay, that’s all QQ’ing. Really, the game just wasn’t holding my attention. I was thinking of quitting, or focusing on other games to fuel the youtube channel, but ultimately my single heart went a wandering, and it found something wonderous – a girlfriend.

Now, my story of WoW vs love life probably isn’t that different from yours. It’s been a chequered history, with highs and lows. For the most part holding down a full time job, a packed social life, and a full raiding schedule does not compute. For me it was easy to pick which one to drop.

Sorry Azeroth, but I /quit

I still have all my characters, all my mounts, achievements, gold.. but I may give it all away and delete it all to remove the temptation to come back. I’m not sure what this means for the youtube channel at the moment, perhaps just focusing on some let’s plays and random video game footage as I can find time to make it.

I may, however do what I normally do. YouTube was always a challenge for me. Could I do it, rather than doing it for any other reason. In the past I have challenged myself in many ways that I’ve never taken any further..

could I make music without having any instruments, or musical knowledge. I went on to found and run some early software / tracking trance groups releasing free music in the mid-90s, and very nearly got a recording contract before moving on..

could I go in to the games industry, despite not being a coder? I went on to produce commercial maps for Duke Nukem expansions, and pushed the engine to it’s utmost breaking limits, before moving on..

Could I DJ, despite having no vinyl, hardware, or expertese? I went on to being offered a resident DJ position in a UK nightclub, before giving it up and moving on..

Could I make gaming videos, despite literally having no experience of doing video work? I went on to not only make gaming movies, but winning numerous international awards, including best gaming movie released in it’s release year, and being sponsored by Intel… before moving on..

Could I climb a mountain and raise money for charity, despite never having done any trekking, and being massively overweight? I not only climbed the mountain, but I helped raise over £5,000 for a children’s charity, and even appeared on Venezuelan radio in the process. Pretty awesome!

Could I make a name for myself on YouTube? This one has proved the biggest challenge, and despite clocking up 1.6million views on the site I wouldn’t say I’ve made a name for myself. I do have YouTube partnership, I am earning money from the site, but I’m not Yogscast.
Do i stick this one out to see where I can take it, or do I move on to a new challenge?

Time will tell… in the mean time, I’m enjoying life… seeya later!

A quick update for the world of sheppo. What’s been happening?

Ironman

Since the last update the ironman challenge has petered off a little. My character died at level 69 whilst trying to find the last quests in Nagrand. Ironically, I died to mobs that I’d previously dealt with easily. Understandably i was frustrated – this time it was definitely my fault. I may continue again in (Mists of Pandaria) MoP as I have already levelled yet another character up to mid-level.

In terms of videos, I still have a few to upload, that I’ll try to get done in time for the release of MoP – as a nice little lead-in.

Guild Wars 2

GW2 has come, and.. well, I want to say come and gone. But I know I’m not done with it yet, but the PvP aspect interests me naught, the same as it does in WoW. The PvE aspect of the game – the levelling is exceptional, and way better than World of Warcraft on so many levels, but I can’t help but feel the lack of any level of raiding is a major detractor for me.

That said, despite the lack of a fully open world, and a excessive use of invisible walls the exploration aspect of GW2 is stunning. The inclusion of jumping puzzles, collectable Vistas, and the general design of the environment has really impressed me.

YouTube

Off of the Jumping puzzles I have gained quite a lot of subscribers to my YouTube channel, and subsequently applied and been approved for partnership through SocialBlade / RPM / Maker Studios, as well as being contacted to become a director for another YouTube partner – to produce WoW guides, etc. I’m not sure where these journeys will take me, but it’s exciting times!!

Pandas

With the release of MoP now less than a week away I can genuinely say I’m a lot more pumped for its release than I was for Guild Wars 2’s. I suspect that’s because I’ve had my fun in Tyria, but also because I’m looking forward to getting back to raiding, and producing more raiding guides for hunters.

On the lead up to MoP’s release I will be putting out a special video that will celebrate at least one of the following items.

The release of MoP

The first video in which i sing!

My first WoW machinima

hitting 500 subscribers

getting partnership on YouTube

Stay tuned, I’m hoping the video gets a few 1,000 views, but you can never predict these things.

Doing a play through, or let’s play is fun. It can be hard work, it’s definitely not the easiest way to enjoy playing a video game. For me it’s a good way to get additional interest out of playing games; I find as I get older it’s harder to find time to play games, even though it’s something I really enjoy doing.

More often though, the playing games isn’t the hard part, it’s the recording, and editing together hours of video that is becoming a mammoth task. Probably due in part to the fact my main series at the moment is the Iron Man WoW Challenge – which essentially sees me questing through as much content as I can, and showing it all. Currently I have 5 levels of particularly dull footage to compile in to videos ready for YouTube.

What to do?

I suspect I may just provide a voiceover for all the content, but even that is time consuming and relatively hard to keep talking about what’s going on in the footage whilst keeping it fresh.

My other alternative is to heavily edit down questing and travelling to keep the footage more compact. My fear is that this will actually be quite jarring to watch for the viewer.

We shall see.

The IMWC should be drawing to a close soon, with 5.x on the horizon, and the Mists of Pandaria launch date 2 months away. It leaves little time for me to level from 68-85.

Keep tuned to my YouTube channel for further updates coming ever other day.

Over at kickstarter there is another gaming fund raiser. This time for an android powered 99$ console, and is generally being labelled as “A new kind of console”. The headline that will likely grab headlines is that games will be free. Actually, only some gameplay has to be free, not the entire game.

screenshot of OUYA

Now, for those of you that have used an Xbox 360, or Zune in the past 7 or so years will be thinking..”that’s nothing new”

Free Games

All xbox arcade games have to have demos for free – that can then be upgraded to full games, or offer DLC via in-game purchasing. Even now, I find it odd that this is not industry standard – the Apple App Store, and the Android store for example are both littered with copies of the same app in Lite (demo), full, or pro (extended) versions.

Generally, I think this is a good move, despite copying Microsoft’s initiative. It makes good sense for both developers, and consumers.

Interface value

The interface here is the thing that irks me the most about OUYA. The kickstarter fundraiser page has an entire section about design “Design Matters – We believe a great console requires a great user experience. We are working with the award-winning designer, Yves Behar, and his firm fuseproject”

Now, this may be talking about hardware design, but the paragraph sits neatly below the same OUYA interface screenshot I linked above. The screenshot is an almost carbon copy of the new Metro-ified Xbox layout

Xbox Metro

Or the media player interface coming to a whole host of Windows 8 bundled applications, such as the media player, contacts, email, and of course the Metro interface, as well as most other Microsoft products this year?

Windows 8 media player

Windows 8 people (contacts)

Or better yet, the Zune v2 software, dating back to 2007?

Zune Software

I think it’s hard to forget how long Microsoft have been pushing the Metro design language, especially considering it was first pushed hard in the consumer space for Zune – the music service that people loved to hate. Although the design language was commissioned in 2006 by Microsoft, some of the design principles date back to Encarta 95 from 1995, obviously.

Console-ation

That said, I genuinely think the Ouya concept has a lot going for it, and a lot of public support (and therefore funding, thanks to kickstarter). I’ll let you read the blurb over at kickstarter so you can make your own mind up. Just remember where some of these innovations are coming from.

Above is my new Hunter – IronmanShepp (lvl 64) – iron man wow challenge legit, currently ranked 1st iron man WoW challenger on the realm, and 20th in Europe.

As you’ll find out when I get around to uploading it to YouTube, I have an episode dealing with the death, and subsequent re-levelling of 2 other characters.

I cheated

I see the IMWC as a challenge to level from 1-85, abiding by the rules. My previous character died part way through this process, at level 63, so the new character levelled to 63 using heirlooms, better gear quality, talents, pet talents, and guild perks. I did this so I could quickly and easily continue earning XP where I left off; so I could continue the 1-85 journey.

This is the reason I’m uploading content to YouTube so you can see that I am able to do all the content to the rules.

I died

It’s also the second time I levelled after hitting 63 and dying. The reason for this is that, i died again, this time falling off of Outland whilst doing Hellfire Peninsula quest lines. I am an idiot – I don’t even know of anyone that fell off Outland when doing questing normally, let alone with perma death. derp!

Midsummer Madness

However, at level 63 I took reverted back to IMWC rules, checked that my character was still too legit to quit, and proceeded to do the Midsummer world event, which netted me a level and a half of experience – I even did most of the opposing faction fires which flag you for PvP.. madness?

Tomorrow the challenge continues in earnest as I continue levelling through Terokkar Forest. Thankfully, I’m not ahead of the levelling curve, so should miss chance to be less of an issue..

I make Let’s Plays for games i like and I upload them to YouTube. I’m not brilliant at it, I do not have a lot lot of subscribers, and my videos do not get a lot of views, but it is something I do because I enjoy it as a hobby, and small collection of subscribers seem to enjoy it too.

Now, I’ve been following TB for quite some time now, since 2008 or so. At the time I wasn’t able to actively play WoW and randomly stumbled across his weekly talk radio show / podcast, which provided me with an alternative to actual game. I found the podcast to be entertaining, funny, and insightful. I found his opinions on the subject of WoW to be pretty much spot on, even if his criticism was aimed directly at the class of my own, or my particular play style – when I did play.

I continued to follow him from WCW radio, to YouTube, Twitter, Cynical Brit, and general mainstream gaming success. Something that should be congratulated.. the boy’s done well.

Yes.. I’m setting this up for a fall.

Quality over Quantity

Since TB started in earnest with putting content on to YouTube he has always claimed his content was technically superior to practically every other video game content on the site. What this actually means is..

He had a decent mic

He didn’t render from Vegas or Premier with frame interpolation on

Now, technically, these things aren’t difficult. Whilst I agree, there are an awful lot of gameplay channels on YouTube that get both of these things wrong (the yogscast still can’t render content consistently or properly for example), he was far from the only person getting them right. I have a history of video production, so knew that it wasn’t so hard to get the quality he boasted.

It went further though. As his channel became more popular he started getting requests for Let’s Plays from his fans. He started to become vocal about the fact he didn’t do Let’s Plays, despite doing several for games like Terraria, and Magicka.
Now, if he chooses to do them or not is not my concern. it’s his choice, and I’d be an idiot to criticise someone for that. No, what I want to look at is his growing disdain for the Let’s Play genre in late 2011, which had gotten to the point where he would openly trash-talk anyone that bothered to create one outside of himself, Yogscast, and Jesse Cox.

He worded this several times as it being lazy content, put out by lazy people. Or lazy idiots. Yes, the entire Let’s Play genre, was made by lazy idiots!

WTF is…?

At this point it’s probably worth looking at Totalbiscuit’s choice to create a series of gameplay videos called “WTF is…” which could be considered exactly the same as most first episodes of Let’s Plays created by other people.
Except Totalbiscuit perceived a single video consisting of 20-30 minutes footage of a game to be harder work to produce than a full Let’s Play series. Totalbiscuit – make a good 100+ episode Let’s Play and THEN tell me which is harder and requires more work..

Towards the end of 2011 his increasing hostility to the genre became too much.. we had this exchange on twitter.

I stand by my comment here. “WTF is..” is exactly as i describe it here, edited gameplay footage with voice over. Sometimes he wont even play the game himself.. which one is lazy again?

Now, i received a response from Totalbiscuit, which unfortunately he has chosen to delete, or twitter is preventing me from seeing it. (If anyone can find a way to show his tweets from December 13th 2011 that would be most useful). Needless to say, he wasn’t over the moon with being called out on this, to which i responded with

Which just made matters worse, to be honest. He threw a number of insults my way including calling me a “cunt” – which is fine, if he doesn’t make responses like this to people..

I suspect it wasn’t the word “cocky” that he found offensive.

July 4th 2012

Anyway, I digress. I still follow Totalbiscuit on YouTube, although I don’t watch his content as much as I used to – not because he called me a cunt, but rather because his bigoted preaching can get tiresome and repetitive after a time. I also find the sycophantic attitude of most of his YouTube fans to be irksome to say the least (let alone in direct conflict with what was asked of from the listeners of the older WCW podcasts) Ultimately, his videos often provoke reaction and debate, and you can’t do that on YouTube without childish xeno/homophobic remarks being thrown around.

However, his July 4th Independence Day video had more bashing at Let’s Plays, and it’s that which I feel needs addressing..

LP or not to LP

For me a Let’s Play should address one of the following areas to be considered good.

Entertaining Players – over time you find the person or people playing the game are more entertaining than the game they are playing. Some examples of this from the people I subscribe to would be Yogscast, Robbaz, RadBrad, to name but a few.

Informative Players – maybe you want to see how to play the game, how to beat a certain aspect of the game, get some background information on the game. Examples here would be Totalbiscuit, or RJWaters2

Entertaining Game – The game is the most important factor to you – perhaps you are unable to play the game yourself, or want to see if it is a game you would like before purchasing. The game is more important than the person providing the voice track. The Let’s Play site gameanyone.com, or LParchive would be good examples here.

In each camp there are many many channels doing really good quality work – both technically, and from an entertainment or informative perspective.

Unhappy Wheels

Instead of focusing on a great many people doing good work Totalbiscuit prefers to focus his cynicism and anger on those that are not, and as an example points out the sheer amount of Let’s Plays of a free web game called Happy Wheels. Now, Happy Wheels is a fun game, it’s easily accessible, and it’s quirky nature and limitless user-created content makes it a great game for people to focus on.

More than that though, from the Let’s Plays of this game that I’ve seen the popular videos almost always fall in to category #1 – Entertaining Players – It’s more about the people playing, and their reactions than it is the game.

You’ll never get the same two reactions from two people with that game, and that’s what makes it so popular on YouTube.

For example, many Let’s Plays of this game have clocked up multi-million views. Yogscast Sips, for example, on a 2 day old video has over 100,000 views on his Happy Wheels Let’s Play. A channel 1/6th the size doing a ‘garbage no-effort’ Let’s Play of a game that’s been done to death, getting more views Totalbiscuit has gotten on ‘quality’ content.

Is this the root of the frustration?

My Advice

Badly made, or badly played Let’s Plays do not prosper. Focusing on these as your entire public opinion of the genre is simply counter productive – especially when some of your YouTube friends have channels purely based around producing Let’s Plays.

Totalbiscuit has a great channel on YouTube, with great content. I understand some of the frequent requests from people there must become tiresome, but it’s better to keep reiterating you do not do Let’s Plays, then don’t do them, and move on.

Mists of Pandaria (MoP) is just round the corner. Yet there is still a lot of confusion around the removal of item slots. Let’s try and get some of these questions put to bed for good.

Blizzcon

When Blizzard initially announced this change they stated they were simply getting rid of the ranged slot for all classes, except Hunters that would lose the melee slots. This would result in an equal stat loss across all classes.
From Blizzard’s point of view it made their life easier too, freeing them from having to create items which were essentially stat boosters (for example, a hunter’s polearm has no game-mechanic requirement in MoP). And as Blizzard weren’t making so much gear they didn’t need to spend so much time balancing boss loot tables.

This is the armour, weapons, and items section of the MoP character screen. You’ll notice there are now only two weapons, as opposed to 3 in Cataclysm.

Everyone (not just hunters) rejoiced, for it was a good change… except…

Stat Deficit

How players failed to realise, that by missing their stat slot they would have a smaller pool of stats I’ll never know, but at some point between Blizzcon and the start of the MoP beta dawn it did, and the panic set in, and with relatively good cause.

The problem isn’t so much a problem in MoP, as we can assume that all newly created weapons, armour and items would be balanced against all newly created content to ensure players had enough of the stats they needed to clear content.
However, the problem comes when you think about older content, and what would happen when patch 5.x lands – players would still be playing 4.x content, using 4.x gear. Would they become worse players over night as a result of losing their stat-slot?

Let’s see what difference it would actually make to DPS in 4.3.x to lose that stat slot.

WITH STAT-SLOT 32860.43
WITHOUT STAT-SLOT 29331.72
difference -3528.71

A DPS reduction of over 10% that would affect all level 1 – 85 content. Something must be done about this!

Cosmetics

To make matters worse, what about all players that had cherished cosmetic items used in the slots that would now be rendered obsolete?

“That lovely pole arm that you got from that place all those years ago – you can no longer use it” – Blizzard

Before you know it, the benefits of getting rid the stat-slot were dwindling.

The Solution

The solution was simple. Currently all classes have 3 slots. Just get rid of one, and allow either ranged or melee items in either. Ranged count as two handers, so a hunter cannot use a ranged and a one hander (e.g. crossbow + dagger)

The cosmetic aspect is solved because out of combat, simply equip the visual items you prefer. It’s part of the whole transmogging sensation that’s gripped Azeroth!

The DPS aspect however is not resolved… so what did Blizzard propose for hunters?

DOUBLE DPS SALE! EVERYTHING MUST DIE!

“It’s simple, we’ll effectively double the DPS of all end game ranged weapons.” – Blizzard

Yes, really. It’s that simple. The ranged weapon you have today, will receive a 100% increase to it’s DPS stat come patch 5.x. Let’s look at an example – currently the best ranged weapon for hunters in the game, and it’s equivalent in MoP

We can clearly see that the item remains exactly the same, apart from the DPS stat, which is doubled.

The only question remains, how does that affect our overall DPS?

It’s actually quite hard to test this at the moment – none of the theory crafting, or gear checking tools or sites support the class or gear changes in MoP, let alone the max level of 90. And lastly, the expansion is still being developed and is in such a state of flux and balancing that we cannot realistly hope to test it with offline log-parsers.

It is however, possible to test the two following scenarios, and the DPS tested using femaledwarf.com, on my character at level 85. 4.3 represents current gear, with a ~50% DPS ranged weapon. 5.0 represents 4.3 gear, without a stat-slot, but with a ~100% DPS ranged weapon. This is to signify the 100% increase in weapon DPS we will receive at the start of 5.x

4.3 29598.00 DPS
5.0 29331.72 DPS

The difference is negligible, and proves that doubling the DPS on end-game ranged weapons will swallow the DPS loss felt by removing the melee stat-stick.

Disclaimers

Any quotes attributed to Blizzard, are made up for dramatic effect

the end stat attributed to 5.0 is actually tested against 4.3, using femaledwarf.com, it’s the best I can do at the moment, please don’t harm me!

So I suspect this will be a bit of a rambling, and controversial post, but I wanted to address the reason why I’m uploading the Iron Man WoW Challenge series of videos to YouTube.

This version of the challenge grew to be too big for its own boots, in a way. Primarily because the Iron Man challenges have always been a personal challenge, rather than a race to be first. It’s more something to prove to yourself than a wowprogress.com-style logging of the best and fastest people to achieve it.

And this is where things start to get weird. A personal challenge can’t be tracked. The rules are yours, and yours alone to adhere to. If you choose some rules over others, well, that’s fine. If you break the rules or cheat you are only cheating yourself.

Oddly though, Iron Man became something more than a personal challenge

It felt like with the publicity the challenge received in spring 2012 had made the personal challenge become something more, with some of the first people complete the challenge making statements about their progress, and appearing on popular gaming sites. A tacking site over at wowironman.com had sprung up previously, and through some clever battle.net API trickery they were able to determine if a player was legitimately competing in the challenge, or not.

It added legitimacy to the challenge where none were needed. With progress being tracked on a central site, wowironman.com, this fast became the place to go to see rankings and to see who had failed or bent the rules. Yet this site is so easily exploitable, it actually throws the whole legitimacy of people taking part the challenge in to dispute – which is a shame, as personal challenges often do not adhere to a fixed set of rules.

Ultimately that is why I chose to document my progress on YouTube so that once complete, I could refer anyone that doubted it to the evidence. Not that i ever expected to finish it, of course, but i certainly hoped I would, some day :)

Let’s take a look at the individual rules, and we see how to break them but stay legit in wowironman.com‘s eyes.

Now, remember, I’m not advocating cheating, doing so would only cheat yourself – the Iron Man WoW Challenge is a personal challenge designed to push you as a player.

No dungeons, raids, battlegrounds, or arenas.

Tracked. You can enter dungeons and kill mobs all you like (as long as you adhere to rule #8), but dungeon achievements are tracked, logged and will cause you to fail the challenge. You would be a fool to do any PvP, as this will likely cause a death (see rule #13)

No guilds, except for level 1 guilds created specifically for the Ironman Challenge.

THE BIG ONE: No deaths. Character death for any reason disqualifies the character.

Tracked. do not die.

So, if you’re wanting to complete the Iron Man WoW Challenge and bump to the top of the leader boards and dont care if you cheat the simplest way to do it is to gear up as you like, use talents as you like, but don’t do dungeons, use buffs, and parties. And most of all, don’t die. Level to 85, then unequip all that gear and reset talents before logging your character on wowironman.com and patting yourself on the back.

Well done, you’ve just cheated yourself out of one of the most exhilarating and exciting challenges in WoW since forever!

Next I’ll be discussing how I’ve approached the temptation to cheat whilst still staying true to the challenge.
